For The Family

This is a great place for families! Not only do we have the fantastic new (and still growing) Blue Derby Trails, but within an hour's drive you can be at clean, safe beaches, by a waterfall or playing in snow! ...and that's just some of the free stuff! A snapshot of ideas for your family is provided below...

(Check out the FAQs for some tips to help with planning your holiday!)

Experience our wonderful, wilderness rainforests, with cascading waterfalls and dense groves of tree ferns... One of the 60 great short walks in Tasmania, Ralph's Falls is an easy rainforest walk. A streaming ribbon of water and sweeping views across picturesque farmland greet those that venture beneath the rainforest canopy.

Mountain Stream FishingFossick for gemstones in the clear, clean waters of our rivers, or maybe dip a line and catch a trout for dinner! There are great trout-fishing locations within one hour of Derby, or fishing charters are one of the many customised tours offered by local Rob's Tours. You can also enjoy a fun family day of fishing at Mountain Stream Fishery, where you are guaranteed to catch a fish! Pack a picnic lunch and take advantage of the BBQs, or if you would prefer to feed the fish rather than yourself, you can purchase bags of fish food to distribute as you stroll around the park-like surrounds. No fishing licence or rod is needed!

If our unique wildlife are a 'must see' part of your visit, you can take a Pepper Bush Adventure Tour for guaranteed sightings and interaction. You can also check out the Great Forester Kangaroos (Tasmania's only endemic kangaroo) and other wildlife at Mount William National Park on the far north eastern tip of Tasmania, and don't forget whilst you're there to have a look at the Eddystone Lighthouse poised high on Eddystone Point and overlooking the world renowned Bay of Fires.

Wander our beautiful stretches of unspoilt coastline. Our pristine beaches can provide a treasure trove of surprises, from delicate sea shells to the popular and much photographed lichen-covered, red-coloured rocks at Binalong Bay.

Trail of the Tin Dragon SignatureExplore our history in our museums, and along the Trail of the Tin Dragon. This Historic Trail includes an iconic attraction in Derby, the Tin Dragon Interpretation Centre which can be found at The Corner Store @ The Tin Centre. Here the full might and fury of the 1929 floods can be seen on an enormous 15 m glass screen.
School House MuseumDerby's School House Museum (shown here) is also located in the heart of Derby, and displays an eclectic gathering of items from yester-year, illustrating life in an industrial village and everyday domesticity.

The Legerwood Memorial Carvings stand testament to the memory of WWI soldiers from this tiny hamlet, and are a popular picnic spot for families.
You can also see the carvings of Pvt Simpson and his heroic little donkey in Scottsdale, just across the road from the Scottsdale RSL Sub-Branch Military Museum on George Street. This museum is the only one of its kind in Tasmania. Here the kids can see a real original 'Huey' Iroquois Helicopter from the Vietnam War, the only one on public display in Tasmania!

If more adventure is what you're looking for, there's nearly 30 km of terrific Rail Trail between Scottsdale and the top of the 'Billycock Hill' near Legerwood. This has a family friendly gradient, good riding surface and magnificent scenery.
Or you can go and play on the Quadbike Tours near Bridport, fly through the treetops at Hollybank Treetops Adventure, or those less keen on heights can try the Segway Adventure instead! You can even take mountain bike tours at Hollybank Mountain Bike Park and alternative trail destinations (but we warn you, our Blue Derby Trails are hard to beat)!

Derby River DerbyIn October every year, Derby comes alive to the sounds of mirth and mayhem in the culmination of the North East Rivers Festival, the infamous Derby River Derby. Competitors take to the river in all manner of weird, wonderful and creative craft to try their hand at conquering the river in single, double and multi-craft races. For the serious contenders there’s also the ‘King of the River’ race, with all the attached fame and kudos. There’s markets and merriment for all the family, and for those who want to participate without getting wet, put your money on a duck in the Derby Duck Race and watch them go!

Do you know a keen and budding young golf pro? Check out the Barnbougle Golf Links near Bridport... Or you might prefer to visit these world class facilities without the kids, and enjoy the spa and wellness centre as well!

To top off your adventure, visit the magnificent Bridestowe Lavender Estate at Nabowla for the unique flavour experience of a Lavender Ice Cream!

Whatever your choice, you're bound to find plenty to keep everyone happy!
